International Women’s Day (IWD) has been celebrated on March 8th every year since the early 1900s. The day was first observed in 1909 in the United States, in honor of a women’s labor movement that demanded better working conditions and equal rights for women.

The first Official International Women’s Day

In 1910, at the International Conference of Working Women in Copenhagen, Clara Zetkin proposed the idea of an annual International Women’s Day to honor the women’s rights movement and promote gender equality. The idea was met with unanimous approval and the first official IWD was celebrated the following year, on March 19th, in Austria, Denmark, Germany, and Switzerland.

Why is IWD Celebrated on 8th March?

The day quickly gained popularity, and in 1913, it was moved to March 8th to mark the date of a significant women’s protest in Russia. On that day in 1917, women textile workers in Petrograd (now St. Petersburg) went on strike to demand an end to World War I and food shortages. The strike grew to include over 90,000 workers and sparked a revolution that led to the overthrow of the Russian government.

In the years that followed, International Women’s Day became an increasingly important day for women’s rights movements around the world. During World War II, it was an important day for women’s contributions to the war effort. Additionally, in the 1960s and 1970s, it was a key day for the feminist movement. Later, in the 21st century, it’s become a day to celebrate women’s achievements. It also raises awareness about ongoing struggles for gender equality.

Today, IWD is observed by millions of people around the world. It’s also become a day to promote gender equality and women’s empowerment. The day is marked by rallies, marches, and events that focus on issues such as equal pay. Women’s political representation, and ending violence against women are some other issues that IWD aims to change.
