“Octopus Ink”: Colour-changing Ink!

A group of scientists at the University of Hong Kong have invented a new type of ink that is inspired by the colour-changing abilities of Octopuses. The innovative product changes colour when exposed to light, a characteristic similar to the animal its mimicked from.

It is predicted that the ink could be used in the future as camouflage, for instance, on clothes. By turning green in forests and sand-coloured in deserts, it would provide a huge advantage for military purposes, hunting, maybe even extreme hide and seek enthusiasts.

Most inks that change colour use chemical reactions to change colour. However, these reactions can be difficult to control and may be unstable. Jinyao Tang and his colleagues, who have been developing the new colour-changing inks at the Hong Kong University, have built the new product by building up from the example of nature.

Colour Changes

The dyed ink particles are made up of titanium dioxide particles and are arranged in a solution which moves in response to light exposure. While some particle microbeads rise to the surface of the printed area, some fall depending on the level and type of light exposure. The ink basically mimics colours depending on the lighting and its wavelength.
