“Octopus Ink”: Colour-changing Ink!

Featured

A group of scientists at the University of Hong Kong have invented a new type of ink that is inspired by the colour-changing abilities of Octopuses. The innovative product changes colour when exposed to light, a characteristic similar to the animal its mimicked from.

It is predicted that the ink could be used in the future as camouflage, for instance, on clothes. By turning green in forests and sand-coloured in deserts, it would provide a huge advantage for military purposes, hunting, maybe even extreme hide and seek enthusiasts.

Octopus #1

Most inks that change colour use chemical reactions to change colour. However, these reactions can be difficult to control and may be unstable. Jinyao Tang and his colleagues, who have been developing the new colour-changing inks at the Hong Kong University, have built the new product by building up from the example of nature.

Colour Changes

The dyed ink particles are made up of titanium dioxide particles and are arranged in a solution which moves in response to light exposure. While some particle microbeads rise to the surface of the printed area, some fall depending on the level and type of light exposure. The ink basically mimics colours depending on the lighting and its wavelength.

China to test 3D Printing on the moon with construction plans

Featured

China plans to inhabit people on the moon! By 2030, the country plans to send 3 missions to the distant rock we all know. Chang’e 6, 7 and 8 will look for reusable resources on the moon to build structures for humans to stay in and for long-term habitation. The first humans living on the moon will be revolutionary and a massive step in inhabiting another surface which isn’t earth. Surely, it would be the biggest event to happen, maybe ever! Millions, or even billions of people would watch humans advance into a new living environment. Time will tell if the moon has the resources and materials for us to construct buildings with appropriate and suitable living conditions.

Earth and the Moon

In 2020, China sent Chang’e 5 (named after the mythical Chinese goddess of the moon) on a mission to bring the first soil samples from the moon back to our planet. Beijing has made huge leaps in advancement in space travel, with their first moon landing in 2013 and plans to send an astronaut to the moon in 2030.

China also plans to start constructing buildings on the moon using its soil in five years. The Chinese have revealed that a robot, specifically designed to make “lunar soil bricks” will be launched together with the Chang’e 8 mission in 2028.

Earth from the Moon

What about other countries? Canada’s space agency has revealed a team of 4 astronauts for the Artemis 2 mission planned for next year, which would be a first human fly-by of the moon in decades.

Who knows, maybe in our lifetime we’ll witness the first human birth on the moon, maybe even mars, considering the progress organisations like SpaceX or NASA are making. Many questions are raised when thinking of these distant, and yet fairly close events, like “will mars or the moon have a flag?” or “will there be passports specifying which planet you were born on?”.

The Moon Close Up

Although the idea of living on the moon or mars is very exciting and interesting, it could also result in quite a few problems, like how visits between planets (if the public could easily travel in space) would be affected by the different gravity intensities? For example, could a person born on the moon, where gravity isn’t as strong as it is on earth, freely visit earth without any health concerns? The body would grow and advance differently on the moon/mars than on earth (and that goes for any planet or surface other than earth that we would inhabit).

As always, there are many positive sides to it, and yet negative sides too. I guess all we can do is wait for scientists, astronauts and many other people to complete their goals and continue with space missions and hope for the best. We’ll figure out something, right?

The Moon

Either way, the progress we’ve made in space travel since the first moon landing, from Sputnik, Yuri Gagarin and Apollo 11 (among many other missions) to 3D Printing and Moon inhabitation in just a little over half a century! Imagine the possibilities that still lie ahead of us, and how far we’ll be in another 50 years, and another, and another…

Will it ever be possible for us to inhabit the Moon?

Going back to the moon and mars flags, a few people have already thought of ideas for flags for both and submitted it. Why not try out your own flag? Design one and print it out, hang it up on your wall. Why not officially submit it? Who knows, maybe your flag will one day be the official flag of a planet or a moon? What better way to bring out the details and colours of your flag than with our amazingly high quality inks and toners? The best you can possibly buy, for cheap prices and discounts on our site! Even right now, you can claim 10% off EVERYTHING on our site! Check it out, make the most of our compatible products!

The first mobile phone call – 50 years!

Featured

The first mobile phone call occurred exactly 50 years ago today. It seems like we’ve had phones for a long time, and technological advancements are becoming more common, innovative and quick. However, when you think about it, mobile phones haven’t been around for that long… Let’s take a look at the history of phones, from the telephone up until now, where we have smartphones.

The Invention of the Telephone

The first telephone was invented on 7th March 1876 by Alexander Graham Bell, one of the most recognised and greatest inventors ever. At the age of 29, his revolutionary new invention, the telephone, would change the world and communication forever. Bell is credited with the invention of the first telephone and the first telephone call too, which turned out to actually be accidental. On March 10th 1876, while initially testing the new device, Bell spilled some acid on his leg and called out for his assistant, Thomas A. Watson, to come and help him. The first words spoken through the telephone were in Bell’s Boston Laboratory by Graham Bell. They were, “Mr. Watson – come here – I want to see you.”

The Telephone

The telephone was an important invention, which progressed and changed as time went on. It was a practical and useful device, then used mainly by wealthy people. So, the telephone was invented in 1876. By 1877, construction of the first regular telephone line between Boston and Sommerville, Massachusetts had been completed. Telephone line construction exploded with growth over the next few years, and by 1880, there were already 47,900 phones across America. By the 1930s it was a common device found in wealthier homes, with calls going as far to other cities.

The First Mobile Phone

Mobile Phones

A little over a century after the first telephone was invented, Martin Cooper, the engineer from Motorola, developed the first hand-held phone. On April 3rd 1973, Cooper took an early model of Motorola’s DynaTAC phone to the streets of New York. The brick phone weighed 2.5lbs (around 1.1kg), was 9 inches (23cm) tall and allowed 35 minutes of talk time, before it ran out of battery. The battery would take 10 hours to charge! Motorola launched the DynaTAC in 1984, after receiving approval from the US FCC in 1983. The cost of the phone in 1984 cost around $4000 (equivalent to around $11,500 or £9,300 in 2023). The phone was huge compared to todays phones. As we all know, phones have gotten smaller since then, easier and lighter to hold and have a much longer battery life, therefore offering a longer talk time.

Mobile Phones

Smartphones and phones today

Mobile Phones

Today, we have many companies around the world that produce and innovate phones and devices continually. Calling today is usually cheap, easy and constantly evolving, with video mobile phone calls being introduced in better, higher quality resolution (though video calls already occurred through picturephones in the 1970s, and mobile phone video calls in 1999. However, today it’s much easier to video call someone. With apps like Whattsapp, FaceTime and other programmes and social media introduced to us, it’s easier than ever before!

Phones today are pretty much slick, quick, modern and smaller than before screens that no longer only make phone calls and send texts. Today, smartphones offer the opportunity to store files, photos, surf the internet and play games. It’s something that 50 years ago, nobody probably expected to happen. From simple calls, going only as far as neighbouring cities, to the first mobile phone, where you could phone from practically anywhere, to modern smartphones, where you can do almost anything, phones have come very far. So, today the majority of people have phones, which are now an integrated part of our lives. They’re so important and essential that without them, not only communication between people would be difficult, but also jobs, education and other things and systems would suffer.

European Commission new environmental rules

Featured

The European has introduced a new set of rules to combat environmental problems. Today, we will be looking at some of the changes that will be implemented within EU territory.

The Right to Repair

The European Commission has proposed a new way for consumers to repair products in a more cost-effective and easier way. This is to avoid products being replaced and increase the selling of more sustainable products, as well as promoting the repair of goods, reducing waste, saving money (consumers) and supporting European Green Deal goals.

The Commission’s proposal hopes to make repairing easy and accessible, with aims to reduce 35 million tons of waste, 30 million tons of resources and 261 million tons of greenhouse gas emissions. Consumers lose nearly €12 Billion annually when opting to replace products instead of repairing and reusing them. With the introduction of the new proposal, expectations show that the EU will grow and invest by €4.8 billion!

New rules to combat Greenwashing

The European Commission has also proposed new rules to combat greenwashing. Greenwashing is the act of providing the public/investors with misleading or false information about the environmental impact of a company’s products and operations. You could say it’s pretty much environmental fraud. Greenwashing (in the UK) is illegal and fines may be placed on companies that decide to Greenwash. The European Commission plans to prevent greenwashing by creating new opportunities for companies that actually improve their products environmental impact by preventing unfair competition and providing consumers with reliable information to make better informed choices.

Carbon Neutrality around the Globe

Cartridge World Cyprus has joined the growing list of companies that are going carbon neutral. Cartridge World Cyprus has made significant developments in achieving its environmental goals by doing so, offsetting the carbon impact of its business last year, including its own brand ink and toner cartridges! Since 2002, when it started operating, Cartridge World Cyprus has collected and reused over ¾ of a million ink and toner cartridges, achieving a zero-waste outcome.

The new Kyocera ECOSYS MA6000 series mono multifunction printers are also adding to the carbon neutral range. The MA6000 devices are part of the ECOSYS Series which stands for Ecology, Economy and Systems.

Daylight Saving Time 2023!

Featured

Daylight Saving Time (DST), also known as British Summer Time, is the practice of advancing the clocks forward by one hour during the summer months in the United Kingdom. The primary purpose of this time change is to make better use of the longer daylight hours during the summer by shifting an hour of daylight from the morning to the evening.

Switch to Daylight Saving Time on March 26th!

When do we switch to Daylight Saving Time?

In the UK, DST begins on the last Sunday in March. Clocks are moved forward by one hour. 1:00 am GMT (Greenwich Mean Time), jumps to 2:00 am BST (British Summer Time). This marks the start of British Summer Time. Daylight saving time then ends on the last Sunday in October. Clocks are moved back by one hour at 2:00 am BST, making it 1:00 am GMT.

Switch to Daylight Saving Time on March 26th!

DST History

Daylight Saving Time was first introduced in the UK during WWI to save fuel and increase productivity during daylight hours. Since then, it continues as a means of making the most of the long summer evenings, and as a way to align the UK’s time with that of other European countries.

Switch to Daylight Saving Time on March 26th!

It’s important to note, not all countries observe DST. Those that do may do so on different dates or not at all.

The difference between Inks and Toners

Featured

What is the difference between Inks and Toners? It’s a question many are curious to find the answer to. In today’s Blog Post, we’ll be explaining and answering that exact question. Let’s get started.

What's the difference between Inks and Toners?

The Differences

Toner cartridges and ink cartridges are both used in printing, but they work in different ways. They are designed for different types of printers. Here are the main differences between the two:

  • Composition: Toner cartridges contain toner powder, which is a fine, dry powder made of plastic particles and pigments. Ink cartridges, on the other hand, contain liquid ink, which is typically made of water, dyes or pigments, and other additives.
  • Printing technology: Toner cartridges are used in laser printers. Laser printers use a laser beam to heat the toner powder and fuse it onto the paper. Ink cartridges are used in inkjet printers, which spray liquid ink onto the paper through a series of tiny nozzles.
  • Usage: Toner cartridges are typically used for printing high-volume documents in black and white, such as business reports or text-heavy documents. Ink cartridges are used for printing color documents, photographs, and other materials that require high-quality color reproduction.
  • Cost: Generally speaking, toner cartridges tend to be more expensive than ink cartridges, but they also tend to last longer and produce more pages per cartridge.

In summary, toner cartridges and ink cartridges are two different types of cartridges used in different types of printers for different purposes. Toner cartridges are used in laser printers for black and white printing, while ink cartridges are used in inkjet printers for color printing.

What's the difference between Inks and Toners?

We hope you now know the difference between Inks and Toners. It will surely come in handy when you next purchase your cartridges.

IWD at Premium Compatibles!

Featured

International Women’s Day (IWD) has been celebrated on March 8th every year since the early 1900s. The day was first observed in 1909 in the United States, in honor of a women’s labor movement that demanded better working conditions and equal rights for women.

The first Official International Women’s Day

In 1910, at the International Conference of Working Women in Copenhagen, Clara Zetkin proposed the idea of an annual International Women’s Day to honor the women’s rights movement and promote gender equality. The idea was met with unanimous approval and the first official IWD was celebrated the following year, on March 19th, in Austria, Denmark, Germany, and Switzerland.

IWD

Why is IWD Celebrated on 8th March?

The day quickly gained popularity, and in 1913, it was moved to March 8th to mark the date of a significant women’s protest in Russia. On that day in 1917, women textile workers in Petrograd (now St. Petersburg) went on strike to demand an end to World War I and food shortages. The strike grew to include over 90,000 workers and sparked a revolution that led to the overthrow of the Russian government.

IWD

In the years that followed, International Women’s Day became an increasingly important day for women’s rights movements around the world. During World War II, it was an important day for women’s contributions to the war effort. Additionally, in the 1960s and 1970s, it was a key day for the feminist movement. Later, in the 21st century, it’s become a day to celebrate women’s achievements. It also raises awareness about ongoing struggles for gender equality.

IWD

Today, IWD is observed by millions of people around the world. It’s also become a day to promote gender equality and women’s empowerment. The day is marked by rallies, marches, and events that focus on issues such as equal pay. Women’s political representation, and ending violence against women are some other issues that IWD aims to change.

World Book Day 2023

Featured

This Thursday (2nd March) is World Book Day!

What is World Book Day and When Is It Celebrated?

World Book Day is a charity event held every year in the UK and Ireland on the first Thursday in March. Every single full-time student is gifted a voucher to spend on books. The first celebrations of World Book Day were held in 1998.

The UK World Book Day has actually been changed to the first Thursday in March to celebrate it before the Easter Holidays and to avoid problems with St. George’s Day Celebrations. World Book Day is also celebrated on 23rd April (in India).

World Book Day 2023

World Book Day Aims

The Day aims to encourage and increase the number of young people reading. A decreasing number of people are reading books, especially with the expansion and development of modern technology, social media and less time spent reading, thinking and concentrating on literature, and more time focusing on digital content. Reading has however switched to things like audiobooks and digital copies of books, which also has its positives. For example, digital copies of different texts are more environmentally friendly.

World Book Day and reading in general is very important in the development of the mind, imagination and knowledge. Lessons can be learned from different books. Literature has also influenced many people and inventions. In today’s world we underestimate reading and its importance.
