Epson’s Environmental Awareness and Eco-Printing!

Featured

As many people may know, printing has historically not been the friendliest to Earth’s environment. However, in recent years, the attention given to our planet’s environment has largely increased like never before and affected the printing industry, as well as other industries. More and more companies and businesses are changing into sustainable, eco-friendly firms. New tactics and ways are being used all the time to make even a small difference and reverse the effects climate change has on our environment, as well as obeying new laws and regulations introduced to help the climate (such as Environmental Laws in the EU).

Pollution

These changes made by companies are not for nothing. Not only does it save the environment, but can also save quite a bit of money. One huge printing company which brings attention to the environmental issues and is forming into a sustainable and Carbon Neutral business is Epson. The Japanese company is in the lead when it comes to its eco-transformation. Epson aims to be carbon negative and “underground resource-free” by 2050, which means that resources harmful to the environment will not be used in manufacturing processes. Epson also has other initiatives to support the environment. The Company is extremely committed to its environmental goals. They manage to find new ways to form their company to suit the environment while keeping prices affordable and users happy!

Environmentally Friendly Eco-Products

Epson’s 2050 milestone is a huge contribution towards the environment. There is another step they want to take before that, though. By 2030 Epson aims to invest around £600 million into changes in the company to aid the environment.

Featured

Konica Minolta celebrates its 150th anniversary this year, with hopes to soar as a growth company again.

The Japanese Company’s roots go back to the year 1873 when 25-year-old Rokusaburo Sugiura started selling photography materials after having his photo taken.

Konica Minolta Camera - 150th Anniversary of the Company!

Konica Minolta’s New CEO Toshimitsu Taiko announced that the company’s 150th anniversary is a new start and opportunity to reinforce the company and strengthen it back up after the many challenges it experienced last year due to supply chain issues with lockdown in China and the impact the war in Ukraine continues to have on resources and energy prices.

Graph Chart Growth

Taiko’s mission is to accelerate Konica Minolta forward and restore the confidence of its employees as well as restoring trust of stakeholders, shareholders, investors and customers. The CEO’s tactic to achieve these goals is by addressing every single problem with honesty and sincerity.

ETIRA Reaching 1 Million Environment-focused Labels

Featured

The European Toner and Inkjet Remanufacturers Association (ETIRA) has introduced its own product certification label last year and now approaches the milestone of 1,000,000 certification mark labels in circulation. These differentiated labels help customers identify more environmentally friendly printing cartridges.

80-90% of Trashed Printing Products could be used again more than once. ETIRA aims to Remanufacture as much as possible.

ETIRA aims to promote the reuse of printing products and raise the profiles of ETIRA-member remanufacturer products. ETIRA labels will provide a better understanding to customers about which products offer the best environmental performance, which will allow people to recognise and differentiate them from other cartridges that have a larger carbon footprint.

According to research conducted by ETIRA, up to 70% in Europe of empty toner and inkjet cartridges are incinerated or dumped in landfills every year. 80-90% of these trashed products could have been used again more than once. More than 500 million plastic printer cartridges end up thrown away in landfills around the world. Remanufacturing these cartridges can decrease their carbon footprint by 45-60%. Remanufactured cartridges are also cheaper by 30% than OEM Products, making it both cost-effective and environmentally friendly to reuse cartridges.

More than 500 million plastic printer cartridges end up thrown away in landfills around the world. ETIRA aims to Remanufacture as much as possible.

ETIRA Benefits

The ETIRA label brings many benefits to their members. ETIRA members make their mark on the circular economy with industry leaders around Europe. The label also assures that cartridges went through the remanufacturing process at a high standard and eventually back on the market.

Currently, the ETIRA label is only available to members through a qualification process and license agreement. This means that the remanufacturer will be able to add the certification mark to any brand cartridge they’ve produced for a third party (if the remanufactured product meet the license requirements).

The History of Printing and Communication

Featured

On this day, in 1814, ‘The Times’ of London became the first newspaper to be produced on a steam-powered printing press. Today, we will look at how the delivery of information and news evolved over the course of history. The History of Printing and Communication is actually quite incredible, really.

Printing throughout History

Before the printing press was invented around the year 1436, word of mouth was the primary source that news and information was spread. Returning merchants, sailors and travelers brought news from town to town and from village to village. Ancient scribes often wrote this information down. Letters and scrolls were delivered from one place to another. Many different materials were used to write down information by hand, such as clay, papyrus, wax and parchment. People delivered information as quickly as possible by using different forms of transportation they had at their disposal at the time – horses, ships and homing pigeons delivered information to distant locations. Until the printing press was invented, things like newspapers and posters took a long time to write and were difficult to distribute to a mass audience.

Printing Press - History of Printing

The printing press increased the speed of communication and spread of knowledge. A lot of time was saved printing books and manuscripts and the development and improvements made to the printing press eventually gave us modern printers. The first modern electronic printer was the EP-101, created by the Japanese company Epson in 1968. It was a tiny printer, which weighed just 2.5kg. Charles Babbage, “The Father of the Computer”, designed the first computer printer even earlier. However, his mechanical printer design wasn’t built until 2000.

Modern Printing

Printing Today

Today, printers are widely available to everyone in shops. Additionally, with those printers come ink cartridges, toners and paper (among many more products). One great example of a shop that sells printing facilities is PremiumCompatibles! We are proud to play a small role in the history of printing and communication. We also encourage YOU, dear reader, to help us preserve the history, which has helped advance, educate and inform humanity. A Big Hello from us at PremiumCompatibles!

Featured

Every year, on the 21st of November, World Hello Day is celebrated. Participants greet 10 people on this day. But what is World Hello Day and why is it celebrated?

How did it start?

World Hello Day focuses on using communication to resolve conflict rather than the use of force. Greeting 10 people on the 21st November is an expression of the importance of communication in preserving peace. Additionally, it is observed by 180 countries and began in 1973 as a response to the conflict between Egypt and Israel.

Two brothers, Brian and Michael McCormack founded World Hello Day in response to the Yom Kippur War. They mailed 1360 letters in 7 languages to encourage world leaders to participate. In its first year, the event gained the support of 15 countries and has since risen to 180 countries. Moreover, 31 winners of the Nobel Peace Prize are among the many people who have stated that World Hello Day is an important instrument for preserving peace and as an occasion that makes it possible for anyone in the world to contribute to the process of creating peace and avoiding conflict – other supporters include almost 100 authors, entertainers and world leaders.

3D Filaments

Featured

What are 3D filaments used for?

3D Filament

3D printing filament is the thermoplastic feedstock for fused deposition modelling 3D printers. There are many types of filament available with different properties, requiring different temperatures to print. Filament is commonly available in the two standard diameters of 1.75 mm and 2.85 mm.

Different types of filaments

PLA

One of the two most often used desktop 3D printing materials is PLA short for ‘Polylactic Acid’.  PLA is the “standard” suggested material for many desktop 3D printers, and for legitimate reason: it is helpful in a wide variety of printing applications, is unscented and low-warp, and so does not require a heated bed. PLA filament is also one of the most environmentally friendly 3D printer materials on the market; it is manufactured from yearly renewable resources (cornstarch) and takes less energy to process than traditional (petroleum-based) plastics.

Summary

  • The best 3D printer material for beginners because of its simplicity of printing and low warp.
  • PLA filament is a sturdy yet brittle 3D printing material.
  • Cosmetic prints, prototypes, desk toys, and low-stress applications are ideal.

ABS

Another popular 3D printer material is ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene). ABS filament is available in two diameters: 1.75mm and 3mm.  Best suited for producing long-lasting parts that would endure higher temperatures. ABS plastic is less stiff and more pliable than PLA filament. Polishing it with acetone can help provide a glossy appearance. A warm printing surface is suggested for 3D printing with ABS filament, as ABS material contracts when cooled, resulting in misshapen pieces.

Summary

  • ABS filament is a tough, ductile material that is resistant to wear and heat.
  • Interlocking pieces like gears, parts exposed to UV and heat like a vehicle cup holder, and prototyping are all common 3D printers using ABS.
  • Wide ranges of solutions are available for great post-processing.

PET

Most PET filaments are copolymers (PET with an additional molecule), therefore finding real PET (Polyethylene terephthalate) filament will be difficult. PETG filament, the most prevalent, is an industrial grade filament with numerous amazing properties. In a metaphorical way, it offers the convenience of PLA filament with the strength and durability of ABS filament. For starters, it has a lot higher strength than PLA and is FDA approved for food containers and food consumption instruments. Unlike ABS filament, it does not warp and has no scents or gases when printed. PET filament is not biodegradable, however it is completely reusable. It’s well known for its lucidity and bridging abilities. PET 3D printing filament comes in 1.75mm and 3mm widths.

Summary

  • PET filament is a tough and versatile 3D printing material with a polished finish that is impact and heat resistant.
  • Mechanical parts and snap fit enclosures benefit the most from this material.
  • It adheres exceptionally nicely to blue painters tape.

Offline Printer. What do I do?

Featured

When you want to print a document, you sometimes select “Print” but nothing happens. Follow these steps to change your printer status from offline to online. Usually you check a printer’s menu and realise a “Printer Offline” message. With a few simple checks and steps, you can get your printer back online.

Broken Printers

Why does it happen?

Occasionally when printing, the device or computer believes the printer is turned off when, in fact, it is turned on and ready to print. This could be due to a communication failure between your device or computer and the printer. It could be as simple as your cable not being properly connected or a simple error caused by a paper jam.

However, issues can also cause an “Offline” printer error with your printer driver or software. This can vary depending on the age of your printer and whether or not you have installed the updates. This printer offline to online controls and procedures is compatible with a wide range of printers, including Brother, Canon, Epson, HP, and many others.

How to get it working again

Ensure that both ends of the USB cable are securely inserted. If the printer is networked, ensure that the Ethernet cable is properly installed. Check your internet connection or make sure the printer is connected to your router if it is wireless.

If you are connected via cable, try also plugging the printer cable end into multiple ports or sockets on your device.

To ensure that the problem is not with the cable alone, try using a different cable. If you were on a network or using a wireless device, a simple test would be to connect a cable to your computer/device to ensure your printer is operational. As a result, the problem could be with your network connection.

Issues in Printers – Solved!

Featured

Tackle your printer if it does not recognise your Compatible Cartridges

We get many questions regarding whether or not our Compatible Cartridges are going to work in your printers. The correct answer is, yes. However, just like everything else, you could stumble on a faulty cartridge or your printer not recognising the cartridge. In Today’s Blog Post, we’ll answer how to solve issues with cartridges or printers.

What is a Compatible Cartridge or a Non-Oem?

A compatible cartridge is a cartridge that is not produced by the original manufacturer. The functionalities however are almost identical.

HP Printer

Some issues you may have with your printer

Sometimes you will find that your printer will state that the printer cartridge is not detected. Reason being that there may be these issues;

  • The protective strips on your cartridges are still on and need to remove. If this happens, than your printer will register the new cartridge and this will cause further issues. To prevent this from happening take the cartridge out of your printer and double check to see if there are any plastic covers, strips or tabs on your cartridge.
  • You need an Internal memory reset. Your printer should automatically register your new cartridge when you install it. This allows your printer to automatically reset its internal memory. What will usually happen afterwards is your printers’ full ink and toner levels will display. It will react as if your old cartridge is inside. To fix this, remove your new cartridge and replace it with your old cartridges then wait for 10/15 minutes. Then add your new cartridge back into the printer. Usually this will resolve the issue, if not then make sure to check the surface you are inserting the cartridge in and check to see if there are any damages to your printer. If that does not work than try and turn your printer off using the power button or unplug your printer and plug it back into the wall then insert your cartridge and then turn on your printer.
  • The cartridge needs to be correctly inserted into the slot correctly. The best way to know that you insert the cartridge correctly is by listening to the click it makes when you put the cartridge into its slot. For Toner Cartridges there may be parts that can cause the toner not to sit correctly into your printer because of damage. If this happens than make sure to replace your toner as this is the only way to fix the problem.

Didn’t Solve Issues with Your Printer?

If you are having any issues with your compatible cartridges and these solutions have not yet worked, you can email us or call us and we are more than happy to help you solve these issues.
